The health of your soil is declining, and so are your profits

  • You’ve been applying fertilisers and saw your soil health and bank balance go down year on year
  • You’ve looked for on-farm solutions but got confused with the choice online
  • The advice is out there but it’s hard to choose where to start
  • The large ticket training courses look promising, but it’s hard to gauge the return on investment, especially with the time commitments required to finish them.

We use all the composting and microscopy skills you need to learn – on a daily basis

  • We’re not focused on accolades, just results. We’ve been making compost and staring down the microscopes for over half a decade. We’ve made more compost piles with a microscope record than anyone else in the country.
  • Our biology has been used all across the country, from Guernsey to Aberdeen and just worked.
  • We’ve taught over a hundred farmers, growers, agronomists and academics to do the same.
  • Our clients have gone to make microbially rich compost for their large farm operations with confidence after taking our time-efficient, hands on training.

Training we offer:

  • Microscopy of the soil food web
  • Making compost which grows the soil food web
  • Succeeding in making compost extracts
  • Interpreting and acting on nutritional analysis

Why train with us

PRODUCE YOUR OWN SOIL FOOD WEB INOCULANT

Compost is your soil food web bioreactor. You will know exactly what to do to maximise the numbers of fungi and nematodes in your soil.

Maximise the value of your compost with extracts

Your high value compost is limited, but when you extract the microbes, you can cover 14 times the area, or up to 500 times if you do seed coating.

Assess your soil food web with a microscope with ease

Microscopy is not complicated. Dr. Elaine Ingham made it simple for you so that you could quickly assess your compost and extracts. We teach it how she intended.

Take the guesswork out of restoring the health of your soil:

Step 1:

Choose the training day or days you’re interested in and easily book it via our online shop. If you need to pay by invoice, contact the lab.

Step 2:

We will send you all the pre-training materials and what to prepare before arriving. We’ll even ask you about your dietary needs.

Step 3:

You will spend a day or days of structured training and leave with your brain filled to the brim and hands full of materials which will guide you, step by step on your journey.

Bonus:

After you return home, we will still be available to you to answer any questions you may have.

Practical sessions were hands-on and engaging

The practical sessions were hands-on and engaging, and I particularly appreciated the opportunity to tour The Goop Factory—a brilliant addition to the day and very generous of you to share your discoveries for your ultimate compost recipe.

You equipped us well

I had a great day learning how to use the microscope, there was a lot to digest but I think you equipped us well to revisit when needed and be able to do it again. Thank you!

Katie

The day was paced perfectly

I found the day to be incredibly helpful, I had basic understanding of soil microscopy but being able to chat through details with helpful and friendly people really helped to bolster my knowledge and improve my confidence. The group size was ideal, and the day was paced perfectly.

Have confidence in reading soil test results

This course is incredible. It has allowed me to interpret my own soil tests and formulate a plan using minerals and biology to increase the health of my soils. Adam is incredibly knowledgeable. Highly recommend.

See the entire picture with clarity

Adam does not just teach you the science of soil nutrition, he teaches you what it is like to view the soil and the plants as one system that can be tuned to perfect harmony. He shows how this harmony can be achieved for different scales, budgets and crops with the most natural and harmless approach.

An eye-opening course on organic agronomy

I had the pleasure of 3 very intensive learning days with Soil Ecology Lab on organic agronomy last week. My mind was totally fried but it came out the other side buzzing with genuine excitement about the many ways in which we can boost fertility in our soils and farm more regeneratively and cheaply!

Adam is an excellent teacher with a deep understanding of this immense topic and we were able to learn mostly through abstract and technical conversations before we were pulled back to the core material. Being one of 5 students, teaching was focused on our own context which made it easier to understand and more relevant to our business.

Would highly recommend whichever method of growing you subscribe to. 10/10

FAQ

Is Soil Food Web the end-all-be-all solution to my challenges?

No, it is not, and we’re the first to tell you that. You will learn what has worked for us, and what has not so that you could maximise its usefulness in your context.

How can I master this subject in a day?

You can’t master it in a day, but that’s why you leave with a spreadsheet which guides you step by step through the process, so that when you feel lost you can recall what happened during the training. We’re also available to answer your questions after the training.

After the training, what tools should we buy and how much will they cost?

You will be getting a complete list to set up on your own, with links to our preferred products and vendors with all the costs, so that you can plan your budget.

How do we get to you and do you provide accommodation?

You can reach us via road or public transport. There is a train station 10 minutes away from us, and you can take a bus, taxi or if all else fails we’ll pick you up. We don’t have on-site accommodation, but there are cost effective hotels and airbnb’s nearby should you need it.

How long is the course?

For the one day courses we start around 9.30am after coffee and finish around 4.30pm with lunch around 1pm.
